The area is renowned for its cultural and environmental amenities, beaches, resorts, connections to the Ringling family, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarasota_School_of_Architecture\">Sarasota School of Architecture<\/a>. The city is located at the southern end of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tampa_Bay_Area\">Tampa Bay Area<\/a>, north of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Myers\">Fort Myers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Punta_Gorda,_Florida\">Punta Gorda<\/a>. Its current official limits include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarasota_Bay\">Sarasota Bay<\/a>\u00a0and several barrier islands between the bay and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_of_Mexico\">Gulf of Mexico<\/a>. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2013 Sarasota had a population of 53,326. In 1986 it became designated as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Certified\">certified<\/a>\u00a0local government.
